Compressive strength is a measure of the concrete’s ability to withstand a load without failing. It’s a key indicator of durability and is measured in pounds per square inch (psi).

We typically use concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 4000 PSI. This is a common standard that ensures excellent durability for residential traffic.

Concrete strength is measured using a compression test on cylinders or cubes. Samples are taken from the pour and tested at 7 and 28 days to determine their final strength.

ASTM International is a global organization that sets technical standards for materials. ASTM specifications ensure the concrete's quality, consistency, and performance.

ASTM C94 is the standard specification for ready-mixed concrete. It covers requirements for materials, production, and delivery, ensuring the concrete meets quality control standards.

ASTM C150 is the standard for Portland cement. This is the key ingredient that gives concrete its strength. Meeting this standard ensures the cement is high-quality.

The water-cement ratio is critical. A lower ratio results in stronger, more durable concrete, while a higher ratio makes it easier to work with but can compromise strength.

Admixtures are added to concrete to modify its properties. Examples include air entrainment, water reducers, and set retarders to control curing time and workability.

Air entrainment is the process of adding microscopic air bubbles to concrete. This greatly improves resistance to freeze-thaw cycles, preventing surface scaling in winter.

While Arlington doesn't have harsh winters, air entrainment is a best practice. It protects against freeze-thaw damage and enhances the concrete's overall durability.

The slump test measures the consistency of the concrete mix. A specific slump is required for proper workability without compromising strength, typically 4-5 inches for driveways.

Concrete sets and cures faster in hot weather and slower in cold weather. Extreme temperatures can compromise strength if not managed properly.

We use set retarders, cool the mix ingredients, and apply curing compounds. We also pour earlier in the day to prevent rapid water evaporation, which can lead to cracking.

We use non-chloride accelerators, insulate the concrete, and can heat the mix water. These measures prevent freezing before the concrete gains sufficient strength.

A curing compound is a liquid sprayed on the fresh concrete surface. It creates a temporary seal to trap moisture, which is essential for the concrete to reach its full strength.
